Treatment for sexual obsessions (and other kinds of OCD) is a therapy called “exposure with response prevention.” In this treatment, a clinician will slowly expose the child to what they’re afraid of. Plus, they come with a lot of guilt and shame. Like any other kind of OCD, these obsessions get in the way of kids’ daily lives. Some kids even worry that they will commit rape or incest - not because they want to or plan to, but because they’re terrified of the idea that they could. For instance, they could be scared that accidentally touching a friend’s hand will be taken as a sexual advance. Other kids might worry about doing something sexual without consent. For example, a teenage girl might be obsessed with the idea that she could be gay, even if she’s never been attracted to another girl. One of the most common is extreme worry about sexual orientation. Sexual obsessions can take many different forms. This kind of OCD can be especially hard because kids are ashamed of having sexual thoughts that they can’t control. For some children and teenagers, these obsessions are related to sex. Kids with OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) experience unwanted thoughts, worries or impulses called obsessions.
